10 Things to Know About Canada's Carbon Rebate
What Is the Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR)? The Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR) is a tax-free payment introduced to help individuals and families offset the costs of the federal carbon pollution pricing. It is distributed quarterly by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) to eligible residents in specific provinces.
Who Is Eligible? Residents of Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, Ontario, New Brunswick, Newfoundland and Labrador, Nova Scotia, and Prince Edward Island can receive the CCR if they meet certain criteria. You must be a resident of one of these provinces for tax purposes both at the beginning and end of the month before the payment is issued.
Age Requirement To be eligible, you need to be at least 19 years old at the time of the payment. However, if you are younger than 19, you may qualify if you have a spouse, common-law partner, or are a parent living with your child.
Quarterly Payments The CCR is paid quarterly, with payment dates typically falling on the 15th of April, July, October, and January. If the 15th is a weekend or a federal holiday, the payment is issued on the following business day.
Small and Rural Communities Supplement The CCR includes a supplement for residents of small and rural communities. This extra amount acknowledges that residents in these areas often face higher costs due to longer travel distances and less access to public transportation.
Automatic Payments If you're eligible for the CCR, you do not need to apply for it directly. The CRA calculates your eligibility based on your annual tax return, and payments are automatically issued once your tax return is processed.
Children's Registration If you are eligible for the Canada Child Benefit (CCB), your children are automatically registered for the CCR. New parents or guardians can register children through the CRA using the Automated Benefits Application or by completing Form RC66.
If You Turn 19 Before January 2025 Young adults turning 19 before January 2025 should file their 2023 tax return to be considered for the CCR. Once your eligibility is determined, your first payment will be included in the quarterly payment after your 19th birthday.
New Residents of Canada New Canadian residents can apply for the CCR by completing Form RC151. This form covers both the Goods and Services Tax (GST)/Harmonized Sales Tax (HST) credit and the CCR. Mail the form to your designated tax center for processing.
Exclusions from CCR Several groups are excluded from receiving the CCR, including non-residents for tax purposes, diplomats, and those confined to prison for over 90 consecutive days. Additionally, a CCR cannot be issued on behalf of deceased individuals.
