After a hearing appealing the E. Jean Carroll verdict, Alina Habba, attorney for former President Donald Trump, delivered a passionate speech criticizing the Department of Justice (DOJ), Vice President Kamala Harris, and the Biden administration.
Standing outside the courthouse, Habba addressed reporters and urged Americans to vote for Trump in the upcoming election. "I have sat with President Trump for years now while he has been targeted with lies and with judges, AGs, and DAs who have specifically run in this city and others on getting Trump," she said. "The Trump administration will fix this problem. We will stop Kamala Harris's regime—because she was there, let's not forget that, and she still is—of using officials from the White House, putting them in DAs' offices and AGs' offices, and attacking your political opponent."
Habba expressed her frustration over what she perceives as the weaponization of the justice system against Trump. "This country deserves better than this. We should not be sitting here at a press conference talking about this," she continued. "We did this in 2016, and every woman had no reports; they come out when it's election time."
Defending Trump's character, Habba stated, "As a woman who has stood with President Trump, who has spent extensive time with President Trump and with his beautiful family, I will tell you that is not President Trump. I completely am disgusted by what I have seen happen to this person, his family, and the Trump Organization that we stand in right now."
She concluded her remarks with a call to action: "You must vote Donald Trump back in because, as an attorney, as a woman, as a mother, our future of this country depends on it, and we need to stop this from happening. The DOJ is supposed to help our country and protect us, not attack us because you cannot win in the polls."
The hearing in question was part of Trump's ongoing legal battle with E. Jean Carroll, who accused the former president of sexual assault and defamation—allegations that Trump has consistently denied. The appeal seeks to overturn the verdict that found Trump liable for defamation and awarded damages to Carroll.
Neither the DOJ nor Vice President Kamala Harris's office has released a statement responding to Habba's remarks at this time.
Background on the E. Jean Carroll Case
E. Jean Carroll, a former magazine columnist, accused Donald Trump of sexually assaulting her in a department store dressing room in the mid-1990s. Trump denied the allegations, leading Carroll to file a defamation lawsuit against him. In 2023, a jury found Trump liable for defamation and awarded Carroll damages. Trump's legal team has since filed an appeal seeking to overturn the verdict.
Political Implications
Habba's statements reflect ongoing tensions between Trump's camp and the current administration as the 2024 presidential election approaches. Accusations of politicizing the justice system have become a central theme in Trump's campaign messaging.
Reactions
Reactions to Habba's speech have been polarized. Supporters applaud her defense of Trump and criticism of what they see as political bias within the DOJ. Critics argue that her remarks undermine the integrity of legal institutions and dismiss serious allegations without due consideration.
As the appeal progresses, all eyes remain on the legal proceedings and their potential impact on the political landscape heading into the election.
