In a recent House floor debate, Representative Chip Roy (R-TX) passionately criticized the latest short-term continuing resolution. He emphasized the constitutional duty to employ the power of the purse in holding an executive branch accountable for any deviation from the law.
Roy stated, "We have a fundamental responsibility under the Constitution of the United States to use the power of the purse to check an executive branch that is not following the law." He argued that merely impeaching and sending issues to the Senate is insufficient; instead, the responsibility lies in actively defunding tyranny and lawlessness, a principle deeply rooted in the Constitution and the Federalist Papers.
Referencing the Founding Fathers, Roy highlighted that the duty to defund unlawful actions was explicitly stated in the Federalist Papers and contemplated in Article One of the Constitution. He discouraged relying on talking points and urged his colleagues not to accept the consequences of broken policies that jeopardize American lives.
Roy drew attention to recent incidents, mentioning Lake and Riley, who lost their lives due to what he perceived as the administration's lax immigration policies. He criticized the notion of funding such policies through congressional approval, stating, "Do not go out and have talking points about dead Americans because of what this Administration is doing, letting people into this country to kill Americans."
In a powerful closing statement, Roy urged his fellow representatives to fulfill their duty by supporting a bill that aligns with constitutional principles. Despite potential political differences, he emphasized the shared responsibility to safeguard the nation's integrity. As he concluded, "I yield back the remainder of his time," the debate captured the essence of a legislator striving to uphold constitutional principles and ensure accountability in the exercise of government powers.
