Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL) visits Elmhurst, Illinois, to speak to members of Chicago's Fraternal Order of Police about his law and order policies, as talk heats up about his possible entry into the 2024 Republican presidential primary.
Governor Ron DeSantis (R-FL) visited Elmhurst, Illinois, to speak to members of Chicago's Fraternal Order of Police about his law and order policies. In his address, DeSantis acknowledged the warm welcome and jokingly commented on visiting midwesterners in February, adding that he is thankful for the opportunity to deliver a message about the importance of safe communities, the rule of law, and supporting those who wear the uniform to protect citizens.
The governor shared a laundry list of Florida's achievements, including being the fastest-growing state, number one in net in-migration and economic freedom, tourism, GDP growth, education freedom, parental involvement in education, low tax burdens, and no state income tax. He also stated that Florida has one of the lowest debt per capita burdens anywhere in the country and currently enjoys a record budget surplus.
DeSantis highlighted the importance of law and order and his commitment to it, which he believes is the foundation of any community's success. He explained that no good economy, education, or community is possible without public safety. He criticized the defunding of the police and took pride in the fact that Florida has not defunded its police departments. Instead, they put measures in place to ensure that no jurisdiction in Florida could defund the police.
DeSantis also spoke about the BLM riots of 2020, stating that he immediately called out the National Guard in Florida to prevent such incidents from happening in the state. He believes that law enforcement is essential to public safety and, in conclusion, thanked the Chicago Fraternal Order of Police for their service and commitment to upholding the rule of law.
